Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye - Page 3 Empty Wally Cole Rye Pottery

Post by NaomiM August 25th 2014, 11:19 pm

Couple of Wally Cole pin dishes

From studiopottery.com Rye Pottery page:

After the war the premises were bought by two young sculptors - the brothers Wally and Jack Cole, who renamed the company 'Rye Pottery'. They moved away from the traditional designs and produced high quality majolica in the styles of the fifties. They trained many apprentices, and most of them eventually left to set up their own potteries in Rye. At one time there were no less than eight individual potteries in the tiny town, making it an important centre for the trade.
One of those apprentices [was] David Sharp (b1932-d1993)

Wally got his first art training here in S. E. London with the sculptor/artist, John Skeaping, which was probably where his interest in drawing birds originated.

Skeaping, who was Barbara Hepworth's first husband, was known for his animal drawings and sculpture.

Happy There were also two or three other Cole pin dishes, but just with the usual monochrome bird decoration so I left them.

I assume it's Rye pottery. Is it like any of David Sharp's pieces on here?

If it is the date it will probably have been made by his son, Ben, and decorated by someone else. The JS could be the decorator, Joyce Stewart. Let's wait for a pic.

Zogware may refer to the design.
Deserves to be in the David Sharp thread, though, doesn't it?

MM may refer to the year 2000. So possibly a commission to mark the new millennium.

I think it's a commission or gift, so a one off. The writing on the back may be a personal message to whoever received it.

I cant read the mark, but David Sharp would have been an apprentice at that stage, so I don't know if you'd be able to tell which ones were his.

It is the rye pottery sussex impressed mark. David Sharp used the D to denote it was thrown by him, but I am not sure about the date as the internet is not very giving about the early impressed marks and their dates. I vaguely recall reading that this was used between 1947-52ish?

Initially I thought that David Sharp might have been over enthusiastic, as his mark is D. However, denbydump (DD) is correct that DDD is Dennis Townsend. David Sharp was the first apprentice and was taken on in 1947 but Dennis started soon after so was also there from 1947. The Sussex mark was used until sometime in 1953.
