Re: Ray Finch
An oil bottle, thankfully still with it's little stopper. The mark is partly glazed
over, but it is RF.

Re: Ray Finch
The slipware glazes used at Winchcombe were, as there name suggests, made up primarily of slip i.e. earthenware clay mixed with water. They also contained a little flint and ground galena, which is a naturally occurring lead ore.
The usual brown glaze was made up of a mixture of white ball clay and locally dug red clay and it was the iron in the red clay that gives the final brown colour.
The white galena glaze (a creamy white) didn't have any red clay and the green glaze, as above, was the white galena glaze with the addition of copper oxide.
So it's the copper that makes it green.

Re: Ray Finch
Any info on this one please?
It's a large tankard, holding upto 2 1/4 pints
Some nice sgraffito decoration through the tenmoku glaze, but for some reason it's hard to see in the picture.

Love the colours on this one. The three teapots were on show at the Estate sale of Harry Horlock Stringers's wife.

Re: Ray Finch
Re-reading this thread - What are the single letter marks (impressed/inscribed) that seem to be on later pots by Ray? This mark sits alongside the personal seal ad seems to change - many letters used - but always a single letter
We think the 'B' is so that it could be matched with the lid (which also has an incesed 'B') after the firing. - on Studiopottery
Others have said it's a glaze ID mark? Would this have been to confirm the glaze and kiln temperature?
Seen N, O, B, C
Any other theories?

Re: Ray Finch
Well I was not impressed with the other 'snow' photos as I thought they added little to the narrative.
But this looks lie a friendly neighbour returning a borrowed charger by the front door.

Easy phortos tho.
What is a 'narrative'? An e-book with every pot?

Re: Ray Finch
Superb indeed. One of the very best studio potters of the 2oth century. Producing work of amazing quality and consistency. Yet he because he was sooooo prolific, his work just does not get the attention it deserves.
Michael Cardew is lionised and lauded. Yet his whole body of work is quite patchy.
