Re: Shelf Pottery, Halifax
Came across this piece about Shelf Pottery which includes correspondence from the owner, in which he details its beginnings and its dealings with Tremar Pottery and Trequoit Pottery (Louis Hudson), which may be of interest:

Abstract Reindeer Stag Figure - XB Mark - Shelf Pottery, Halifax
Hello, anyone got any ideas on origin/maker of this curious piece. It is an unusual, abstract figure of a reindeer or stag. It has impressive antlers and three legs.
It's made of stoneware and is decorated with stylised slip patterning. The base is marked indistinctly with what looks like XB.
It stands almost 8" tall. I thought it might date to approximately the 1950s/60s? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I can't believe you've got one too! Is it exactly the same and do you know anything at all about it? Is it XB on the bottom?

Re: Shelf Pottery, Halifax
yes XB
luckily I got mine from a dealer who had bought a large collection of Shelf pottery so although it was an unusual design ( which was the reason I picked it) the glazes, decoration and clay were a perfect fit for Shelf.
Freaky that I hardly ever look at mine but yesterday my wife and I discussed it over breakfast.

Re: Shelf Pottery, Halifax
Thanks Dan - that's so useful. It is such an unusual design & I picked it up for exactly the same reason. It reminds me a bit of prehistoric cave paintings.
I'm not familiar with Shelf so see what I can find on line. Thanks again.

Re: Shelf Pottery, Halifax
the three legged stag may have roots in prehistoric sub - Saharan culture, I have seen clay animals from Mali that share the tripod form

Hi thanks for the tip. Had a pleasant half hour refreshing on his stuff earlier and it is lovely. Couldn't find anything quite the same and frustratingly the mark is a little obscure. Thanks

Re: Shelf Pottery, Halifax
Definitely Bernard Rooke. Not the best of his pieces tho. He was also very prolific,as his sons also worked at the pottery and produced work under his imprimatur. The most prized pieces nowadays are the very large lamp bases, which are now very much design pieces. There was an exhibition in Peterbrough a few months ago.

Re: Shelf Pottery, Halifax
the fact that Rooke pottery can be mistaken for Shelf and vice versa speaks volumes

Re: Shelf Pottery, Halifax
I've just come into possession of a huge Shelf Pottery Lamp. It's 70cm tall and 40cm wide. Bulb fittings on the interior and exterior. I'm currently waiting for a 50cm retro looking shade to arrive in the post. I'm very pleased with it. Has anyone else seen a piece of Shelf Pottery this large before?
