Geisha Girl ware, Japan
Greetings. I have this glass plate in a very poor condition. The two upper letters are not that visible. The stamp is red, so I think it's a newer one. Can any of you help me with these letters? I am very grateful

You might find it on the Gotheborg.com website.

I think it could be Japanese. Can you post a photo of the front, please.

Sure. I'm sorry though that I called it "glass" - it is porcelain I'm sure. I think it's a teacup - platter. Most of the painting is gone, so there's more lineart than paint. It might actually have been used to alot of teadrinking. Hmmm ^^
The scene is four women at a lake and a child. The painting has shrunk so much so it does not fill out the form in the kimonos. The porcelain still looks very white though. :) I'm just an amateur. So I can't tell it apart from a copi or something newly done.

Re: Geisha Girl ware, Japan
It's Giesha Girl ware, porcelain. I have some pieces too. It was a cottage industry in Japan in the early 20th Century; factories making tea sets with transfer printed outlines in red, and the sets were then sent out to decorators homes to be painted in various bright colours. The mark may be the factory mark giving the name and place of manufacture (district, Prefecture). It's complete; just a little smudged.
I'll move it to the ID My Pottery forum in due course.

Perhaps it's not helping, but I bought the "sister" to it as well. This plate was a little bigger, but the stamp on the backside is different. Here goes:

They were made In their millions. I don't know if anyone has collated the marks and patterns yet.

Here's a few of mine. The red outlines are transfer printed, but the over-enamelled colours are added by hand and sometimes you can spot places where the decorator has missed a bit.
The bases are unmarked.

Most of the Geisha Girl ware is hard to identify as far as "maker". This type of ware was mass produced with tranferred design, then being "colored in" by school girls, housewives, grand mothers, etc. Some of this type of ware is better than others depending on the factory and the workers.
