Ceramic Art London (CAL) Empty CERAMIC ART LONDON 2019,

Its Spring again, so here comes the swankiest show that the CPA participates in. High end, with prices to match. But it certainly makes an impressive show, and is always well attended. Been there once myself, and it was an interesting experience. Tickets start at £15.

I have been sent a free ticket by one of my customers and so shall be going on Sunday.

The cost of exhibiting for the ceramicists once selected is really expensive and so the inflated prices are necessary.

Personally, I think the change to it being an event where the main purpose is for the CPA to make money rather than it being a showcase for ceramic talent is a retrograde step.

Very busy today, and the morning’s tickets were gone and they only had a few for the afternoon. Thankfully got a couple of free ones from one of the potters.

I made the journey "north of the river" today and it was alright, although still too much that I would leave on the shelf, if I saw it in a charity shop, in my opinion.

As always, I was impressed with Rebecca Appleby's work, which was largely closed vessel forms rather than open/bowl forms that I have seen before.

Thomas Bohle's pots and glazes would have excited me 30 years when I was interested in that type of thing and I was impressed by the slab sculptures of young ceramicist, Verity Howard.

Oh yes, and I bought an Eddie Curtis guinomi, so he must get the thumbs up too.

Signed

" A cynical old git."

Overpriced.
Been a couple of times, and prices are waaayyyyy above what you would spend on the secondary market.
Obvious reasons.VAT. Its a very expensive  place to show cost-wise, the prestige of the upper end of the 'LONDON' art market, Sheer hubris….
Lovely to see...… Ultra Big Laughter .Expensive to hold as your own!

Funnily enough Rebecca Appleby’s work didn’t float my boat, but I would have got a Bohle if I could afford one. Hanna’s work is very hot and I thought I might buy a piece for investment but in the end none of it floated my boat either. There are some who don’t exhibit much outside of London which is why I chose Jongjin Park in the end .
As for ‘secondary market’ prices, the main advantage of buying in the primary market is choice. You can get the best of the best. Admittedly at a premium price but it’s almost guaranteed to sell if you need to. The John Jelfs Jug I bought via a gallery a couple of years ago was expensive but it was perfection, imo.

It all depends how you collect Naomi. If you are looking at a historical perspective, then Ceramic Art is useless. It is 'of the moment', and the market in 'Contemporary Art' is incredibly fickle. To put a price on it. I last went two years ago. There were pieces there by potters in my collection, that were four times what I bought them for at auction.

Well I sell on the secondary market to be able to afford the primary market prices so aside from a bit of graft it costs me very little :D To add, there are always the potters who you can only get on the secondary market - Wallwork, for instance - but with a lot of potters that have arrived in the market in the past 10 years, you’d be waiting a couple of decades to get their work via the secondary market

There are auction houses who are commissioning pieces by contemporary potters, like Partridges selling Ben Fosker and Steve Booton. It can potentially be more lucrative for the potter than selling through galleries although it’s a bit hit & miss

I would never suggest to any collector to buy a pot as an investment. The only reasons for a collector to buy a pot is that they love it, think it is fairly priced and they can afford it.

Ceramic Art London is to see what's about and to buy if you love it.

It is 20 years ago that I took over the Harlequin Gallery and started to have 10 solo (or occasionally 2/3 person) exhibitions a year and continued that for 10 years. I went to Fairs such as this to look for people to exhibit, as did other galleries. There was someone there today doing just that and I suspect others over the weekend. However, if I was starting out now I can't imagine how I would fill all of the slots.

Which of course Studio begs the question oft asked lately. Is the Golden Age of British studio pottery finished?
As to Auctioneers and commissions.Well, this is not the age of Cyril Frankel and Bonhams. Partridges have been very patchy. This piece by Nicola Theakston was commissioned by Bonhams last year. But it failed to sell.

Sad as it is, it was inevitable. With most sports events cancelled for the immediate future, with it probably not too long before Bars, restaurants, museums etc are closed …. they had no realistic choice,
Many potters and craftspeople are going to take a large financial hit. But these are unprecedented times. The risk is too great.

It was via Eddie Curtis on Facebook. He said all exhibitors have had their deposits refunded with a letter explaining that Central Saint Martins, the venue owners, had pulled out. The CPA won’t have told the public yet because they’re trying to find another venue
