Alton Towers pottery (Staffordshire)
This is bemusing me. Nice little slipware bowl, red clay, about 10cm across, feels handthrown. There's a faint stamped mark, which seems to be four lines in vaguely Gothic script, the third one reading "Staffs", the fourth probably "England".
I don't think it's particularly old, but on the other hand it doesn't seem at all the kind of thing the modern Staffordshire industry has ever gone in for. I know the Gladstone Pottery Museum made some agate slipware, but it doesn't look liketheir mark

You learn something every day on this Forum.
I thought Alton Towers specialised in rides they had to be closed down and now I find that there was an Alton Towers Pottery, which has a Facebook page started by collectors.

Re: Alton Towers pottery (Staffordshire)
Thanks very much, mystery neatly solved. I suppose the second line must read "Handcraft".
The pottery was in operation from 1953 until 1994. The potter there for the last ten years or so of its existence was Stephen Parry-Thomas, who had previously worked at the Gladstone Museum and later set up the Morrigan Craft Pottery.

Small agateware vase, just under 11cm high, with foil label reading "Alton Towers Handcraft Pottery".
