Thanks for the info.
From what I have gathered so far, Powell Pottery changed it's name to Llangollen Pottery in the early fifties and that was when they started using the symbol you described. On this bowl, Powell Pottery and Llangollen are in script and the symbol isn't there just the date 1952 with a little dash before and after.
If I can take a picture and then figure out how to post it, I will.
Thanks again,
David

Hi. I have three pieces of llangollen pottery marked with the monogramme CSA. Is anyone familiar with their maker? Both pieces are unglazed terracotta with incised decoration. The only reason I recognised the 1962 jug is because I had the other two. I will put on pics of all. Happy

Hmm that was a bit confused. All three pieces came in some boxes I bought in an auction. It was later I realised the jug had the same mark. It is so different, I almost missed it. Doh!

Thanks very much for your answer. So it seems he must have worked at Llangollen before 1965. Nice to know these things.

Recently sold this small commemorative plate (about 5 1/4" dia.) from the Llangollen Pottery. Have seen others listed on "a certain auction site", all dated from the 50's. Most seemed to be plainer than this one, lacking the flourish of the contrasting swirl of colour. A nice decorative item.

Were all Llangollen pieces marked? I have been trying to identify this cockerel, which I thought was probably continental until I saw a Llangollen one on ebay. Now I'm not sure. No marks that I can find, and the clay appears to be green.

Thanks
Cat

There's one earlier in this thread that looks to be same form. Is it 17cm tall?

Yes - spotted that one and, although it is more painted than slip decorated, it prompted me to post on this thread. Mine is 16.5cm approx. I guess it could have been influenced by continental folk art of some sort. Maybe we'll find out!

Well not all Llangollen pieces were marked , but most were, if not a label would be used , sometimes a faint sheeps cradle mark was used as well , your appears to have come from the same mold as the other on the forum , a lot of llangollen was decorated with slip , the base of yours seems to have gone wrong and maybe it was a second or something I don't know .

Rare Llangollen Jonah and the Whale, recently sold on ebay. The seller granted permission for me to copy and post the photos on the forum.

Thanks Naomi - that really helps. Now I'm pretty sure my cockerel is Llangollen, as the whale (nice!) looks to have been made from a similar coloured clay.

I wouldn't have noticed it if it hadn't been for your cockerel. Happy The seller hadn't id-ed it because the backstamp is too faint.

Everything is pointing me to Llangollen Pottery , formerly Powell Pottery and I would date it around the early 1950's. Ed
