Attractive Sgraffito Slipware Dish - Thoune, Switzerland
Hello again,
I bought this very attractive little dish at a yard sale. it is made of red clay covered with a very dark brown, almost black glossy glaze. It is decorated with a sgraffito design of a young man carrying a bunch of flowers, and has been handpainted. It is well done and very appealing. It measures 8.5" by 6.5", by 1.25" deep. It looks as though it dates to the 1950s/60s, and I thought it looked Continental or Scandinavian maybe? The base bears an incised mark but it isn't really clear what it says - could be a T or +, and N or M, and then a W?
Has anyone got any idea who made this?
Thanks

I believe it’s by one of the Thoune Potteries in Switzerland, although they were also made on the Swiss/Hungarian border. Koehler Biel, maybe

Thanks Naomi - I'll have a look at Koehler Biel & other Swiss potteries and see what I can find.

I think the mark is M over W. I thought I had a note of it because it’s often confused with Mary Wondrausch’s mark, but can’t find it

You're MUCH better at pottery than geography, Naomi!
