Mid Century Modern Pewter Container - Marked - Country of Origin/Maker?

It's been a while since I posted so hope I am successful! Purchased this simple, hand-crafted pewter container at the Washington, DC area estate  of a woman who had travelled and collected widely.  My initial instinct was that it was/is Scandinavian but have also considered the possibility that it is Japanese.  It is marked but I am unable to make out - either initials or characters? It measures about 4" across and 2" high.  Welcome any/all comments.
