A wall plaque with no method of hanging? Not a great commercial decision. Which might imply a more amateurish production. Although it is a very nice looking piece.

I think it would also need protective pads on the bottom to prevent it scratching whatever it is standing on as the clay is extremely rough.

A studio potter has to literally hasd make his living by what she/she sells. So every making decision must be infuenced by commercial that. The 'extremely rough' surface obviously implies some one who in not influenced by making a living. A very good amatuer?

Re: Heavy square tile/plaque - Roland Zobel
Is it possible that it was intended to be used as a functional tile in its own right? It would sit well inset into a wooden panel in a kitchen cupboard or as part of a tile-topped table, maybe even a feature tile for a tiled wall.
Alternatively, it could have been made purely as a stand-alone decorative piece of wall art, and it lacks a way of being hung because it was meant to be framed, hence the unglazed margin.

It may originally have been in a wooden frame; possibly for use as a trivet
