That's very interesting early decoration by David Sharp - not seen anything quite as interesting by him from that period.

Thank you, the backstamp has confused me as it states made in rye, rather than the more usual made in rye pottery? I guessed it was made whilst he was at the rye pottery, and like you said, a bit earlier. It is growing on me Happy x x

Yes it is from when he was working at the Rye Pottery (1947- 1956) - I would imagine towards the end of his time there.

I held a selling exhibition called "The Potteries of Rye" back in 1999 where we launched Carol Cashmore's book of the same name. Below is an image from the invitation card so excuse the quality. Both pieces in the image are from the Rye Pottery with the dish being by Dennis Townsend and if my memory serves me correctly the lamp base being painted by David Sharp.

Very nice plate mowen - unfamiliar pattern which probably makes it quite rare.

They were allowed to do one-off decorations in this manner at the Rye Pottery. These they signed and they were sold as individual "studio wares". Little guidence was given and I haven't seen any pieces that have been identical.

Picked this pair up today. 5.5" high. One missing it's top. I'm assuming they're from the 1950s.

I quite like those too although not my favourite colourway. Are they for oil or vinegar or something similar?

Yes, I think so. Certainly the right size to have on the dinner table.

I have a couple of Rye pieces in my collection to share. Both damaged but so pretty. Any information re-dating gratefully received.

The backstamps are the same as the cruet bottles posted by Naomi yesterday so they date from anywhere between 1957 and 1971. They are both miniatures if I'm not mistaken?

The P impressed on the mug is Pam Goddard's throwing mark. She was the pottery's first female employee and initially worked as a decorator. Started throwing in 1962 so that and the stripes suggests around that time. The jug no later and probably late 1950s.

The decoration was called "Cottage stripe".

This "Candy stripe" decoration was first used in 1959 so most likely 1960s.

I picked up this odd piece of Rye Pottery from a Boot Fair today. It has the first mark used by the Coles from 1947 to 1952 and David Sharp's impressed D to indicated that it was thrown by him.

I doubt it has a pattern name. It's just what David Sharp felt like doing at the time.

A sleeper in this weeks auction  Laughter   I've never come across this shape before - very unusual.  Has the early Made in Rye mark.  One for the collection I think...

Bottom image showing rye mark. I don't have the carol cashmore book but i think this was used before 1956? Can anyone attribute the pattern to particular artist?

The mark on your lamp base isn't one of the earliest ones but the one introduced around 1952 and used for around 4 years, after which POTTERY was added under RYE.

I was hoping that there would be a thrower's mark for one of the apprentices on the base but it appears not.

There is a considerable amount of decoration and it isn't a standard pattern but I don't really feel that I should suggest a name, as it would only be a guess.
