Well spotted Dan. On closer inspection I believe the 2nd mark to read St Ives not Dave which is actually much more likely thinking about it. I had considered Buchanan but only had the Hayle mark which didn't look right. I guess he moved to St Ives at some point. Thanks again John

John Buchanan, Anchor Pottery
Very small jug from the Anchor Pottery, St Ives. Originally started by John Buchanan in Hayle, Cornwall in 1966, it moved to St Ives in 1971.

Re: John Buchanan, Anchor Pottery, Hayle and St Ives, Cornwall
i recently put this out in the shop - an Anchor pottery coffee set.
Re: John Buchanan, Anchor Pottery, Hayle and St Ives, Cornwall
Here's the set of Anchor pottery in my shop last week. Even reduced it because there just doesn't seem to be a market for studio pottery in Portsmouth.
Re: John Buchanan, Anchor Pottery, Hayle and St Ives, Cornwall
I tend to try and avoid , teapots , coffee pots , tureens lidded pots and the like , not because they aren't well made or look fine but simply because they are very hard to make much money on .

Cheers :) It was just very small so I wasn't sure if I was really seeing an anchor, but the glaze and shape look right

Yes, it’s John Buchanan’s Anchor Pottery. He was at Hayle before St Ives

john buchanan
john buchanan moved to st ives in1971 and opened the st ives crafts centre in the late 70s he apparently run a school of pottery from these premises although i never saw it . when i met him he was working in fine white porcelain and making some interesting pieces , i found him difficult as he was conversing in artspeak. I dont know if he is still potting , he must be in his late 70s by now.

Re: John Buchanan, Anchor Pottery, Hayle and St Ives, Cornwall
A long history of potting in St Ives. He started as an assistant to Anthony Richards at Arch Pottery in 1961, He started Anchor Pottery in 1966 at Hayle,, and moved to the Sloop Market St Ives in 1971-82. He then had various addresses for potteries around St Ives for many years. I think I read on Facebook that he had retired and was now in a Nursing home.

Obituary from the Nostalgic Hayle Facebook group
John was a founder member of the Cornwall Crafts association and Guild of Master Craftsmen. He was also a member of the St Ives Society of Artists and the West County Potters Association. In 1961 John went to study under Anthony Richards at the Arch Pottery in St Ives. By 1963, in the heyday of the studio potter, he had become responsible for all production, and, with an assistant (Bunty) was producing a thousand pieces a week. In 1966 he moved to Hayle and founded Anchor Pottery, first producing a range of earthenware, followed by stoneware, which is still in use 50 years on. Eventually, in 1977, he completed the restoration of a neglected mission chapel at Halsetown and opened The St Ives Craft Centre, where he developed his individual Studio pieces in porcelain, and built a gas kiln to explore the effect of different reduction firing techniques. John's pieces have simple bands of colour representing the sea and sand, inspired by fishing boats left high and dry by the falling tide.
