Re: Gustavsberg (Sweden)
I think - but not completely sure - that it's from the Zoo Series, designed I guess in the early 50s - again I could be wrong. There were several other critters in the series including three lovely hippos which appear for sale from time to time, and a seal. Interestingly Lisa Larson a protege of Stig's produced two zoo series: Stora Zoo and Lilla Zoo which were very successful and rank among her best work I think.
Hope this is of use. I couldn't find anything about Zoo series in any of my books or online...

Re: Gustavsberg (Sweden)
Thanks, I know the Lisa Larson series Zoo, Lilla Zoo and Stora Zoo from the book about Lisa's work with Gustavsberg by Andreas Ribbung, but didn't know about Stig Lindberg's Zoo series. It is not mentioned in Gisela Erron's pretty complete book about Stig Lindberg. I also searched the internet, including old auctions, but Could not find any similar except a Swedish blog on which someone found the same item a few month ago on a Swedish fleemarket. Here's the link to that blog: http://50-talskeramik.blogspot.nl/2010/10/fynd-fran-kistamassan-711.html Yesterday I also asked for info there but got no response until now.

Re: Gustavsberg (Sweden)
Thank you all for your quick respons. It's helpfull. I also got feedback from Sweden. As far as I can judge it now, the bison is most likely produced in the fourtys. In very small amount as one of a series of experiments prior to the final Zoo series.

Re: Gustavsberg (Sweden)
Hello everyone,
I was registered as Gerard Olthof but had problems logging in. Tryed everything including asking forgotten password but nothing helped. So I registered again under the name G.Olthof.
In december I posted the blue Bison by Stig Lindberg. I asked the Swedish National Museum for information about it. They answered it is not in their collection ( and they have around 3000 Stig Lindberg pieces ) They'll research it now and come back to me. Of course I'll share the info as soon as it comes in.
Regards: Gerard

Re: Gustavsberg (Sweden)
It's not one of the collectable Gustavsberg pieces so there isn't much info available online (at least, not in English).
This is the company history.
http://www.gustavsbergsporslinsfabrik.se/historik.php
I suspect the cup and saucer date from sometime in the 1930-50s.
The obscured letters look like Dlu, but I haven't found a list of factory backstamps to confirm that.

Re: Gustavsberg (Sweden)
It's odd in that the mark (and the font used) don't seem to appear anywhere that I can find.
Gustavsberg is a town in Sweden and the factory that we know as Gustavsberg (AB Gustavsberg) started in the Oldberg factory, which has been in existance since the middle of the 17th century. From 1866 bone china was produced by them, making it the only factory in Europe outside of Britain where bone china has been produced. Benporslin on the bottom of your saucer is Swedish for bone china. That suggests that your cup and saucer was made there but then the letters before Gustavsberg on your saucer should be AB, which they don't seem to be.
From the end of the 19th century the factory developed its individual style and was modernist in design and feel, which your cup and saucer isn't. Before then it is stated that the factory made items in the English tradition and this suggests that your cup and saucer may date c1870.
I can't say that for certain and the other unknown is that AB Gustavsberg had a second factory, AB Gustavsberg Interessenter, and I do not known if they used different marks to the main factory. This second factory produced only household china rather than the more expensive items produced at the main factory and could have been responsible for your cup and saucer at a lated date than that which I have suggested above.
