Celtic pottery (Newlyn & Mousehole)

here is my bargain from the auction today.



the two at the back have loads of damage and are only really fit for the bin




here are the 3 good ones on their own

they could be restored

very much doubt it. when i say they are ready for the bin I think that's where they were found. To be honest it would cost more to restore than what they are worth

I'm hoping i've posted this in the right place!

So, it looks like celtic fan's canister, but its on a terracotta type body.... ?what are your thoughts on it please?

I recently bought this mug which I believed to be Celtic Newlyn. I have been unable to find any images with this same design so would be grateful if someone could confirm (or otherwise) the origin of this piece. If this is Celtic is the detailing around the handle commonplace as I have never seen that before, and is there a name for this pattern.

not a design I have seen before but definitely made by Bill or Maggie and I would guess it was made in Mousehole

very unusual both the shape and the colourway.
I would say it was made in Mousehole

the handle is a give away,I have similar mugs with labels

Finally dug these out of the attic. Two Celtic vases with phoenix bird motif

Very pleased to have found these today at Malvern. They are very early Celtic made at Mousehole by Bill Fisher. As rare as 'hens teeth'.

Can anyone tell me if the Bill Fisher referred to here is the William Fisher who worked out of The Studio, 25 Swain Street, Watchet?

In the 1970's whilst on holiday in Cornwell I purchased 2 black Terra Cotta wall plaques that came with a booklet attributing them to William Fisher. One is of a horse approx. 30cm x 24cm and the other is of a Japanese warrior (oval shaped approx.17cm x 23cm)I am trying to do some research on these as to their origins and current worth etc.

Any info. regarding this will be much appreciated.

the first 2  images are very small but look very like Bill Fishers work at Mousehole, also the description of his subject matter, Bulls, lions and Unicorns all sculpted in 'terra cotta' and looking heraldic etc all ties in with Bill's Mousehole production.
I'm very excited by your post and will be investigating the Somerset connection

At last - I now know that my ones aren't 'only children'.

Like Dan, I've not heard of Bill working from Watchet.
It could just be a coincidence that like the Mousehole site, it's called The Studio - I guess many places could have been.

Do you remember if this Studio, sold only Bill's Work, or did it sell the work of other potters?
I suppose this could just have been another outlet for his work.
Although, we don't actually know much about Bills work and where he worked from, after Maggi moved to Newlyn. We know he did continue and made some lovely stuff, but from where is rather murky. But I'd be very surprised if he moved his work to Watchet.

My money is on this being an outlet for his work.

How many pages does this booklet have?

Thanks for your reply - since making the post I have been advise that these are probably not by the same William Fisher? One is of a horse approx. 30cm x 24cm and the other is of a Japanese warrior (oval shaped approx.17cm x 23cmWe bought the items in an art shop when we were on holiday in Cornwall,in the St Agnes Bay area not at Watchet but the booklet has clearly been issued from the Watchet address. The booklet has three more pages but these are devoted to the history of Terra Cotta. Not sure where this leaves this topic - I have at present unable to make any further inroads to the source of the two items.

I can assure you these are most deffinately by the same Bill (William) Fisher.
Whoever told you otherwise doesn't know his work very well (if at all).
I have quite a bit of it myself and loads of photo's, one of which shows a very similar example to your horse.

These ARE by the Bill Fisher of Mousehole. 100%
