Ruthanne Tudball
Ruthanne was born in California USA but moved to the UK when she was a teenager, five years ago she moved to a small village near Norwich in Norfolk where she now has her studio.
Her technique of throwing square shapes and building wet clay teapots results in a very organic look, one that I have yet to see any other potter produce, the pots are decorated in clay slip and soda glaze.

Re: Ruthanne Tudball
these are my recent purchases, the angular form of the teapot and saki cups are achieved by throwing cubes of clay, working them from the inside to retain the natural, uncut angles.
All of the teapot parts (lid, body and spout) are thrown on the wheel then manipulated into pleasing forms before bringing them all together whilst still wet to produce a teapot.
I think this unusual technique contributes to the organic appearance of Ruthanne's teapots.

Re: Ruthanne Tudball
the sodaglaze has been complimented by an intentionally rough & rustic finish, note the unturned foot with all it's bumps & lumps,it has been left in it's hexagonal form which gives a clue to Ruthanne's technique of throwing angled lumps of clay to produce her trademark ridged forms.

Re: Ruthanne Tudball
This saki cup is more Westernised, the form has a less natural look to it with structured decoration and a mix of sodaglaze + oxides

Re: Ruthanne Tudball
I also bought some wonderful vases,I think their height excentuates the twisting lines produced by Ruthannes internal throwing of angular forms.

Re: Ruthanne Tudball
My first ever Yuinomi or tea bowl, unlike any other piece that I own,I think it was made several years ago before her forms became more angular.
Soda glaze and ash decoration with a seascape theme.

Re: Ruthanne Tudball
Love your collection dantheman, I'm jealous. I have just bought a second piece by Ruthanne for my collection in a mixed auction lot. Her stuff is so distinctive I spotted it immediately. I intended selling it as I already have one but find I can't part with it
