Matte White Dramatic Modern Pottery Mugs - Signed
Hello, this pair of pottery mugs have been eluding me for some time, as far as a positive id. I'm sure they'd be difficult to drink out of with their pinched rim. I thought the signature read Stoler or Stolber, but I can find nothing on them. Does anyone recognize their form or the signature? Thank you! Anne

Re: Matte White Dramatic Modern Pottery Mugs - Signed
I've looked through all my books and online resources and sadly haven't found anything but I mainly deal in British, European and Scandinavian pottery - if these are American (which they could be by dint of your location) then I simply wouldn't have a clue unfortunately. We don't seem to get any American pottery in my parts (outskirts of London) unfortunately. If these are American then quite clearly it's a huge shame because they're stunning!

Hello, and thank you, Pip. I'll keep plugging away then. Just on first look, what do you think the signature reads? Sometimes I look at items so long I lose all perspective on the signature. Only reply if you have the time and inclination. Thank you again! Anne

I have looked at it for some time and the only thing I can sort of see is 'Peter' but I'm not convinced about it, that first letter is odd and there's no cross on the 't'....

Hi Cory, welcome to the board. How brilliant that you've managed to ID Anne's wonderful mugs. I'm also glad that the hunch they're American and that the base reads 'Peter' was correct :-)
On the link you gave were these mugs similar to Annes:-

I take it also that these are contemporary production?

Hello Pip! Thank you, and what a terrific site. I can't believe I just stumbled across it now -- while searching for an Arabia artist... (Though, I thought you're name looked familiar, which I confirmed when I read you're tag line... the same Pip I came across while doing some whitefriars research a couple years back - a belated thankyou)
You're spot on with your hunches! They are contemporary... 80s design, but still in production. Saenger has a studio in Delaware, just over the border from my old stomping grounds in NJ. His work is exhibited in galleries across the US. Collectors love his puzzleform ceramics (I've had a few of his sets pass thru my hands over the years....) His Design I sets are even harder to come by and can bring a pretty penny.

So glad to have been able to help in the past Cory :-) and I'm extremely pleased you're here now. It's very timely indeed because we've been scrabbling around for information on 20th Century American design (us mods are all in England) - so please, stick around we need you!
