A small jug with BE mark - Benjamin Eeles
A sweet little jug. The mark looks like BS, but is rather feint & I may be mistaken.
Any ideas gratefuly received.

Possibly BE for Benjamin Eeles, Shepherds Well pottery, but I'd need to see a better photo of the mark to be sure; this one is out of focus.

Thank you Naomi.
Sorry, but that is a good as I can get with my camera. The mark is very feint to start with and as you can see, I am no David Bailey
Good to have some names to look into, so thanks again.

That runny light blue glaze is found on Eeles family pots, so I think Benjamin is most likely

Lidded bowl - Simon Eeles
One of the recent finds, I thought it would be an easy one, but apparently not. The seeming “3S” bit might be attributed to Beryl Sutcliff(e) but I can hardly make out the larger and more explicit mark. Asian import…? The frog on a lily pad with flowers around are rather charming. It feels very very heavy considering it is only a small thing.

Re: Eeles family, Shepherds Well Pottery (Dorset)
I’m wondering if it’s a very early piece by David Eeles. The second mark could be a well for Shepherd’s Well Pottery

Thank you. I’ve had some Shepherds Well pieces but not like this. I’ll have another look. The DE is close to the one in the book and I know marks are sometimes a little different to how they are shown.

Re: Eeles family, Shepherds Well Pottery (Dorset)
I’ve not seen that written mark on the base before. Simon Eeles is a very accomplished potter. I think each member of the family made their own pieces, otherwise I’d expect to see both Simon and David Eeles’ stamps

Re: Eeles family, Shepherds Well Pottery (Dorset)
Thank you both for your thoughts, much appreciated.
It was all I could put it down to really, I have not seen a painted mark before either. Another Eeles piece I have by David (porcelain) is marked twice, nothing painted, both impressed with initials & the Shepherds mark.
Unless my initial thinking is wrong & that this isn't an Eeles piece at all, either by David, or /and with or without contribution from Simon, possibly made by someone else entirely?
Is the bottom wrong for an Eeles piece? What do you think naomi, you know your bottoms

Re: Eeles family, Shepherds Well Pottery (Dorset)
It looks right for Simon Eeles. Certainly his stamp, and the bowl has a lip for a lid. I visited their exhibition at the National Trust’s Stourhead where Benjamin Eeles was demonstrating on the wheel, and I remember there were pierced bowls there; I didn’t pick them up so I couldn’t tell you if it was a pierced top or pierced lid. I guess if it was going to be a collaboration with anyone it would be with his mother Patricia who does slab built pieces. She might have made the lid.
