Looking forward to it. Still debating whether or not to go to Oxford Ceramics this weekend.

Seems as tho the early July date suits them better than the previous August one.

I preferred the first weekend in August but maybe more people are away then so the earlier date has resulted in more sales.

However, if you are a potter who is at Rufford the weekend before then I imagine it is a tiring couple of weeks.

Chui-I Wu is top of my list. Hoping she has something small and affordable on her stand, and isn't sold out.

The potters usually don't put everything out on the first day so I'm sure there will be something for you to buy for Mr. M.

Post by studio-pots July 3rd 2015, 9:06 pm

Went today and enjoyed meeting a few old friends that I haven't seen for a while but there was nothing that got me excited.

There was a potter , who originates from Barcelona but now living in S. W. London, who made big oval vases that were fairly interesting. His name was Albert Montserrat. I also thought Pat Southwood's work was fine but that's about it really.

On Tuesday evening I went to the City Lit Ceramics Diploma Graduation show and there was far more exciting work there than I saw today so I don't think it's because I have become jaded.

I almost forgot that there was a potter from Japan there, Haruhiko Kaneko, whose work was very fine. Largely oil-spot glazes and intense blues.

The teabowls were £1200 - £2000 so I imagine out of the price range of most visitors.

Hoping to get another piece by Fleen Doran. Promised to pop over to Pat Southwood's stall. Also have Anna Whitehouse on my wish list.

It will be interesting for me to hear your overall impression, Naomi, being a relative newcomer to such events when compared to old timers like myself.

It was good. Especially liked that they had the students on tables in the middle of each tent; I like to see new faces. It's bigger than the other fairs I go to - Oxford and Farnham - and it's nice To see potters that aren't at the other two. The gnarly dudes were there. Very tempted by a Sven Bayer bowl and a Nic Collins bottle, but as I'd blown my budget I stuck to cheaper items.

Ian had major surgery last year and says that he still has to do too much sitting down for his liking. Did you buy one of his ladies? Embarrassed

No, a dog's head. He said he's going to miss seeing it sitting on his windowsill. I wonder if he's selling off some of his old pieces.
He had lots of his naked men, but I didn't see any naked ladies

Worst thing was the lack of road signs. We drove right through town without seeing an entrance and it wasn't until we turned round and drove back that we found one which was impossible to see from the other direction.
Plus we kept forgetting which tent people were in when we went back to buy our favourites. Ended up going through them all at least three times.

Albert Monserrat only had one pot left by the time we arrived on Saturday
Impressed with Pat Southwood's work. Was planning to get a tsubo but ended up with a tall vase.
Although I liked seeing the students work I was disappointed by the poor technique on a lot of them. Lovely glazes hiding a multitude of sins.

The trouble is with degree courses in Ceramics these days is that there is only a very small proportion of the course devoted to ceramics and even less making.

Albert Monserrat didn't have many pieces with him on Friday morning when I was talking to him and they were very inexpensive considering the size and the quality.

Not this tall vase from Pat?
