Definitely Sid Tustin. Your remarks about lightness are bang on. He was a remarkable potter for many decades. The earthenware makes it quite old, as Winchcombe stopped using Earthenware in the mid 60's.

Thank you for the info, much appreciated. It’s a bit nibbled on the spout but still a privilege to have such a fine piece!

The inside looks like tea-dust tenmoku, and the outside has natural ash from the wood-firing

Its looks very much Standard ware though. Which they produced for many years, with different glaze options.

You finding the lid reminds me of a day many years ago when I was in the Winchcombe pottery showroom and someone came in from a local restaurant with a large lid of an item that they had smashed and needed to replace. Winchcombe have made these ranges with different glazes over many years and the person had brought along the lid to match the size of what he required. He did find a casserole and lid exactly the same size and his old lid fitted the new casserole base perfectly, so he still ended up with a spare lid to go with his new lidded casserole dish.

TUSTIN - Winchcombe Pottery - Page 10 Empty Winchcombe mark with added numbers?

Post by HelenC October 30th 2023, 7:42 pm

Hi, no problem IDing this jug as  Winchcombe, but I was interested in the significance of the added stamped numbers which I haven’t come across before? Reads 26 and 98. Any thoughts please? Can it help date the jug? Thanks

Also I believe Winchcombe pottery was founded in 1926. So might be something to do with that.

Hi, just wondered has anyone seen a Winchcombe sake cup before? This is only about 4.5 cm high and 5.5 cm across , very delicate and light work for slipware I think. Did Sid Tustin make many more of these I wonder. TUSTIN - Winchcombe Pottery - Page 10 Pxl_2010

Unlikely to be a sake cup. More likely it's an egg cup or a salt or condiment dish

That's what I wondered, the previous owner called it a sake cup, it's too wide for any of the eggs I have , so I don't think egg cup but it's really nice.

A sugar bowl is also possible. Part of their standard ware range of traditional English pottery
