Re: The Friars Pottery, Aylesford
Ursula Mommens made vase in a similar shape but perhaps more flared, as she said that it made arranging flowers in them so much easier that more usual shapes.

Very pleased to have found this today, but did have to squint at it for a long time in the low light at the back of the charity shop before seeing the marks.

I don't think even flowers could have saved it.

No, I know the Aylesford vases that you are talking about and it really is that funny edge that is the problem.

With those seriphs, it's a dead ringer for Aylesford, but then there are those dots......
Re: The Friars Pottery, Aylesford
Coffee pot with that interesting lid set up. And in real life is much more colourful than my photos portray.
I guess about the same date as the other one on the thread but I've no evidence for that.

Re: The Friars Pottery, Aylesford
I think that studio pottery coffee pots were a mid 1960s to mid 1970s phenomenon. They hardly ever got used and so stopped being made.

Re: The Friars Pottery, Aylesford
I got this at the boot sale Saturday morning meaning to sell it for a handsome profit.
Saturday afternoon, the neighbour invites me round for a drink, so I think I'll try the Aylesford goblet with a bottle of Abbot Ale.....
WHAT A COMBINATION!!!!
Bottled Abbot is sublime at the worst of times but drinking it from this transports you back to the middle ages.
It definitely is not going on ebay until I've worn it out.
A completely new drinking experience and highly recommended.

Re: The Friars Pottery, Aylesford
I love them, but unfortunately not worth much on the secondary market,

Long necked jug. And an unusual small slip decorated bowl with a sandy textured surface by Aylesford pottery; possibly from their more recent ranges.

Re: The Friars Pottery, Aylesford
I would say sugar bowl. Wrong shape for a chawan type teabowl or beaker, and The Friars potters were more tableware than Japanese pieces

Re: The Friars Pottery, Aylesford
Looks like an early piece. It’s a glaze that’s also found on early Muchelney Pottery by John Leach so I think it’s something developed by David Leach and introduced to Alyesford when he set up the pottery

Boot sale this am: I'm just examining a plate that looks Leachey but is unmarked and an acquaintance peers over my shoulder and remarks "Leach?". Well, it's not and I replace it. Then, blow me, at the next stall is this......
I've got one at home already but it pales into insignificance when compared to this one. Heavy, deeeeeeply incised, breaking colour glazes in the grooves and more capacious - this holds a whole 500 ml can of Whatevs.

Re: The Friars Pottery, Aylesford
A substantial amount of Aylesford pottery comes up in charity shops, Boot sales and Ebay (David Leach's Aylesford pottery..oh yeah!). So there production must have been quite substantial. Equally. it is nearly all of a high quality and well made, and was in production for a long time. Yet not a great deal seems to be written about it.
