Unless you have a big hand it's No. 17 the Small Lidded Casserole (1 pint volume). Cheeky

Vase by Jason Wason (I think), would be good if someone could confirm this for me.

Decorated pin dish with St Ives mark and England. Any idea of age and is the decor distinctive enough to tie it down to any individual?

The vase is an individual piece by Jason Wason made during his time at the Leach Pottery (1976 - 1981) and the dish is probably a Standard Ware individual butter dish. Likely to be from the 1960s. The glaze looks like the "mottled grey brown" from their Standard Ware range of glazes. Less common than the tenmoku or celadon but that's about it.

Celadon mead jug. Two things I'm curious about: what does "FF" stand for, and why is the mark reversed?

These jugs were made as a commission but I haven't been able to find out what FF stands for, although they are not uncommon. The Leach Pottery seal backwards is by mistake but not sure how it would have come about.

The full set would have been the jug plus 6 mead cups (small bowls on a raised foot) on a circular wooden tray that would have been made in St. Ives by Robin & Dicon Nance. The shape of the jug and cups were from a David Leach design.

Thanks for that; I suppose it would have had a lid too, although I can't complain as I only paid a couple of pounds for it, and I'm in good company as the one in the Tate Gallery doesn't have one either. I have seen a couple of reversed marks online, one on a David Leach piece:

They don't appear to have had stoppers and it is quite likely that the jugs were sold separately. If they had been designed to have stoppers then I imagine the inside of the top would have been unglazed.

Absolutely no problem that it is only the jug, as I was only giving extra information. It is perfectly saleable as it is.

It is interesting that the Allans, whose site that is, have attributed the pot with that mark to David. It could be that they spoke to David about it when he was alive and he told them that he had had a stamp with the reverse seal at some point. Might be worth asking them.

Post by Marcusborra July 24th 2015, 8:32 pm

Could you please help me to identify this bowl with an impressed potters seal and name. The seal mark which is difficult to photograph, resembles that used at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives but the impressed name is difficult to read unless you already know it (sometimes if you know what it says you can read it).
Diameter of the bowl: 12cm
Height: 6cm
Length including handle 17.5cm

It looks like St Ives "standard ware", but for some reason the "ENGLAND" underneath,
seems to have been impressed upside-down..

Thanks Denbydump. I have just realised that this is called a standard-ware egg baker made by the Leach Pottery. Hadn't realised that the name is meant to be England and it is upside down. Excellent

This lidded pot has a faint St Ives mark and another which is obscured by glaze.

I haven't been able to find another example of that decoration but if looks like very fine brushwork.

Obviously from the image it is impossible to tell what either of the marks are. Any clues when looking "in the flesh"? Is it porcelain?

Also would it be possible to see a side view of the dish and lid standing to see the outline?

I will have to get it under a bright light when I get home to make sense of the marks. I think the one on the right is a square St Ives mark.

I think it's very pale stoneware rather than porcelain.
