Looks very much like a Lowerdown motif and brushwork. Not seen that on St Ives pieces before.

I will have to get it under a bright light when I get home to make sense of the marks. I think the one on the right is a square St Ives mark.

David Leach, Lowerdown Pottery with similar decoration -

I'll move it to the other thread unless you say the other mark is a St Ives one.

Yes I saw these on eBay last night. I honestly cannot make the marks out so if the consensus is David Leach, I'm happy with that.

bernard leach - The Leach Pottery. St Ives - Page 9 Empty ST IVES POTTERY JUG WITH UNUSUAL DECORATION OR IMPOSTER?

Post by bishbosh September 4th 2015, 1:05 am

This is my first post so I hope there are no problems.

I would appreciate any comments on a jug I found recently which appears to have the St Ives Pottery mark but has been decorated with rather gaudy roses.  Either I am wrong about the mark or it has been vandalised at some point!

It is about 7.5"/19cm tall and looks similar to others I have found on Google, which either had or apparently at one time had a lid.  I am attaching photos (I hope!) and can provide more if they would help.

Thank you

You're right it's a Leach, St Ives, jug, but it's been painted at a later date with barge-style roses - the sort of decoration you get on wooden buckets and cast iron pieces on canal barges. I'd get some paint stripper and clean them off.

Looks like a coffee pot with the lid missing.

As Potty says, it is most certainly a Leach Pottery coffee pot with the lid missing and the flowers have been added by an amateur painter at a later date.

You see many of these coffee pots without their lids offered on Ebay as jugs by unscrupulous sellers but the Leach Pottery jugs were a different shape.

It looks a bit like Trevor Corser's work, I have a couple of them.

It's made at the Leach Pottery anyway, but without a personal seal you can't really attribute it firmly to an individual potter, in my opinion anyway.

I haven't been able to date it, but I know that colour way wasn't in production for the whole period of Standard Ware production.

Is it around 5.5 inches tall or 3.5 inches?

The No.25 jug that Naomi refers to is a cream jug at 3.5 inches tall. If yours is taller then it's a milk jug.

Not sure when they were made in that shape. No.29 on the page above is that height.

So not that common.
