I 'll take the little yellow milk jug, No. 62. Unusual shape. The pattern book is unusual & interesting. I wonder if in 100 years all this information will be online and popularity will grow or if it will fade away.

bernard leach - The Leach Pottery. St Ives - Page 19 Empty Leach pottery, St Ives - can anyone help identify maker and possible date

Post by sarah3645 November 23rd 2022, 6:44 pm

Purchased at auction in Warrington. I know it’s leach pottery just wondering if anyone can give an approximate date or attribute a maker. It looks like an early piece to me but I’m a complete novice. I will have better pictures when I collect it. Any thoughts appreciated.

Is that base earthenware? It also looks like the sort of te standard slipware design they did in the mid in the 1930's when Harry Davis (he of the late Crowan pottery) was working there. It might possibly be earlier, but the clay does not look quite right for the 1920's. Unfortunately, although these pieces are quite old, it is only the pieces that can be identified with a specific potter that are eagerly collected.

You could look at our Leach pottery thread for more information. It is all a bit jumbled, but there is a lot of information there!

I concur with philpot's thoughts and it looks to be from the 1930s.

I am assuming that it's quite small and a beaker?

It would have been part of what we call the Standard Ware range at the time. The standard ware was basically the bread and butter range of the Leach pottery which bought in the money. There were a specific number of shapes which were continuously produced by a team of potters. They could produce quite a few in one day.

Saw a similar one this weekend, but with additional decoration down the front. Unfortunately locked in a cabinet so I couldn’t see the rest

I think that might be from the 1930s and in earthenware, Naomi, as I have something similar that I will photograph and post when I remember.

You could have turned the bowl over, philpot, with the muesli still in to photograph the mark ....... and the mess. Happy

I know it sounds odd but try Muesli with either orange juice or grapefruit juice and finely chopped apple... it's amazing

We use oats as a base Crawford, and then throw in what we want on a daily basis which varies. In there today were Oats, Chia Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Almonds, Walnuts, strawberries and blueberries.
I find Fruit Juices are just overwhelmingly too sweet!

Almond Milk! Or Oat, or lots of other 'Milks'. Just think of what all that Sugar is doing to your teeth. and your risk of diabetes! We eat a lot less meat now, but try to have a diet of as wide a range of foods outside that.

bernard leach - The Leach Pottery. St Ives - Page 19 Img_2315
bernard leach - The Leach Pottery. St Ives - Page 19 Img_2314Saw this for sale on eBay - didn’t really know what it was other than by someone at Leach.
Bought it and saw that it appeared to say 10 shillings in pencil in the footring.
Research showed that at number 9 in the catalogue of 1952 was a “small decorated bowl” measuring 5” x 1” for sale at 10 shillings.
My suggestion is that these bowls are Leach standard ware hence there are no personal marks on them.
My catalogue of 1946 shows the price as 5 shillings so I think it would be a fair assumption to believe this bowl was produced c 1950.
I looked back at this thread and saw a couple of similar examples but I’m not sure they were identified as standard ware.

Nice little bowl. Interesting for the decoration on Standard ware I would think. It just the internal decoration that is unusual. But then circa 1950 They had Both Michael and David Leach as well as Bernard and Bill Marshall working there. So there would probably have been a far greater latitude as to what personal touches they did to the standard ware pieces.

Due to it's length I've moved the discussion about the oak leaf decoration to the General Pottery Discussion forum -

Hi Philpot,
The back of the catalogue explained that for a extra cost of between 10 shillings and £10 you could have a piece made by BL or DL BUT it would have their personal marks on which obviously these standardware decorated bowls don’t.
Interestingly the Teaset priced at £10 had description of some decorated items amongst them and some not.
These related to the “leaf decorated” items.
Kind regards
Neil62

John Bedding was one of the longer serving apprentices at The Leach Pottery 1967-79. This large 42 cm bowl just illustrates how very much he was at potting. He had a couple of years in Japan and a long potting career in St Ives.bernard leach - The Leach Pottery. St Ives - Page 19 Img_0985bernard leach - The Leach Pottery.
