Catherine Blair founded the Scottish Women's Rural Institute in 1917, in 1920 Mak'Merry was set up as the trading arm of the institute, initially members invested small amounts of money and produced food items for sale but soon moved into craft work as well, one craft being pottery decoration.

Pots were hand painted and offered for sale, most pieces are marked, now highly collectible; a small jug is shown below:
