Moulded Toby Jug with impressed CHB. Considerd Brannam but clay colour and base all wrong. Any ideas?

Re: Slipware Toby Jug
having done a little googling around it looks as though yours is Dartmouth Pottery , found one with a stamp , it had red clay though , but I wouldn't rule out a Charles Brannam design , yours could be an early one

Re: Slipware Toby Jug
Well I know he did have a signature of simply CHB , he also made toby jugs and we know they came from devon , so if his design an early piece would be worth a few bob .

Re: Slipware Toby Jug
Found one (maybe the same one big ed spotted) with a Dartmouth stamp on the base (google "Dartmouth pottery treacle glaze toby jug or character jug - F188").
But there are small differences between the two - one (Dartmouth) is a straight mould, while the other (yours) has evidence of hand finishing - sgraffito on the mug, etc.
I suspect that yours is a copy of a Dartmouth piece, hence the initials on the base.

Re: Slipware Toby Jug
Having looked at all the pictures on-line of Dartmouth jugs there are quite a few differences between them and mine. A lot of the design has been incised into the clay by hand and not moulded like the Dartmouth, the pockets on the jacket are different, decoration on the hat is not the same, the cuffs on the sleeves are plain on the Dartmouth but mine has 2 horizontal lines. Even the mouth and nose shapes are different. Superficially they look the same but the detail is very different.

Yes , but if you type in Dartmouth toby jug on ebay , you'll see they are basically the same design , very slight alterations , but deffo the same designer .

Re: Slipware Toby Jug
I'm not trying to make out its something that its not, but to have a face that's modelled differently to the Dartmouth one makes it different IMO and not the same design. They obviously didn't come from the same mould as mine has a lot of details missing that the DM one has i.e the pockets have been scribed into the clay on mine and are clearly moulded on the other.

Re: Slipware Toby Jug
I wasn't suggesting they had come from the same mould. Just that someone may have copied the Dartmouth toby jug by hand and added their own flourishes.

Re: Slipware Toby Jug
But that's what I mean , the character is the same , same pose etc , tobys all had a prototype , that's what I think yours is , if Brannam made yours and sold copyright to Dart pottery then the result could be the moulded less detailed ones , somebody designed it , why not CHB ? just an idea
