Just Started - Found a few items
Hi,
started my "West German" pottery collection today, discovered them last week on TV.
I found 4 items at a car boot, very low cost, , I will post pictures later.
2 of them had the word "Foreign" stamped into the base, one had WEST GERMAN as well.
Am I safe to assume that the "Foreign" stamp was for exported WG pottery?
Does having the Foreign stamp affect value and collectability?

Not necessarily. A lot of countries stamped their wares 'foreign', including Japan, Czech, Portugal, etc, etc, and it might indicate a pre-WW2 piece.
Looking forward to seeing the photos.
Re: Just Started - Found a few items
Thanks for the update.
2 of the items I have seen as "Fat lava" items on other sites, one is a Scheurick item based upon the glaze and patterning, exactly the same but a "pot" rather than a vase, The other item I have seen, similar pattern and colurs etc. though no ID yet.
The other 2 I have not found out much on them yet.
I will try and post tomorrow.
Thanks again.

No the Foreign stamp does not affect collectability.
Colour...bright, not brown is desirable.
Texture or interesting relief patterns.......lots of the lava type glaze is sought after( though I am not a fan).
Unusual forms will be more desired as well.
If your avatar photo is an indicator...you are doing well.

Re: Just Started - Found a few items
Hi Kincardine,
yes the avitar is one of my items, I have purchased 7 west german pottery items to start me off, so to speak. I went for midrange items (as far as I can see), ranging from £9 to £40.
I have purchased 4 items from a local car boot sale at the weekend at a price of £2 each, I will upload pictures tonight some time, just started about 1 week ago, hopefully building my collection from my own finds, will buy if I see one I really fancy.
Cost is not the issue, I get more satisfaction finding, identifying and displaying Fat Lava pottery than buying a collection, I also enjoy the "discovery process" as well as the identification phase. I have investigated the ones I have found and will post the reults later.
Thanks for your comments todate.

Re: Just Started - Found a few items
in my experience most new fat lava collectors seem to buy every German pot they find and end up with lots of regrets
