WG Sgraffito? And then... from which company? Wekara?
I've been looking around for West German sgraffito for a while, but it's very hard to find. Finally, yesterday, I found this vase in a thrift store.
It's made with red clay. Check.
They used sgraffito technique. Check.
And I seem to have seen something like it somewhere online. No check yet. No marks either.
Can somebody help me? I don't think it's Eiwa or Sawa. That's why I guessed Wekara.
I could be totally wrong off course...
Height is 25 cm. Diameter bottom is 10,5 cm.

Westerwald but Wekara is wrong indeed. WEKARA =Wilhelm Krumeich at Ransbach were probably the most important wholesaler in the Westerwald. They distributed
ceramics of Marzi&Remy and many other companies, e.g. AKRU, Knodgen (Ilkra) and very likely Sawa and Eiwa. Evidence from Wekara catalogs and other sources was confirmed by witnesses at Höhr recently.
Having said that the question remains who dunnit ---- possibly for WEKARA.
I have some ideas but no solution yet.
The decoration techniques were traditionally called "Red" (flat incised or deeply cut, Sgraffito) and "Knibis" (impressed).

My first thought was Dumler & Breiden, because of the sgraffito work.

D&B ? I would have expected D&B markings on the base then.
This vase is much more traditional than D&B in the 50s and 60s. Tendrils are very old pattern in the Westerwald, traceable in the early 18th century.

Thank you again, Volker, for the information you're providing. I hope you realize that the more information you give on the different vases/subjects, the more I stay interested in West German pottery. It's like a secret world unfolding itself. Very fascinating. Also because it gives the vases I already like an extra 'life'. Thx.

But isn't Westerwald stuff mainly stoneware?

Also has similarities to this piece:

And some D&B pieces has a similar red clay base.

D&B had a very particular way of marking.
The following are D&B..showing typical markings for their red clay pieces.

Alright, time to bump again. But only because I found another version of the vase I already showed you. Slightly different, but not much.

Don't bother. It looks the same as little brother. Otherwise I would have shown you. :-)
