Unusual Hand Painted Vase
I have seen this vase in a charity shop and it looks like a quality vase. I was wondering if anyone could recognise it. It has markings that I cant find on the base. Also around the bottom and top there are unusual marks that dont seem part of the design . It is it is about 25 cm in height.

Re: Unusual Hand Painted Vase
I'd say it's a tourist piece from the Austrian or Germany (maybe even Swiss or N. Italian areas). The impressed pattern numbers on the base leads me to believe this was made in the 1920s (maybe 30s), possibly German or Austrian, or even Czech. The TR is probably the painter's monogram. I assume the impressed squares are supposed to be the maker's mark but they're unfamiliar.

As for whether or not it's a quality piece, hmmm, not convinced. It's probably on a par with mottoware made in N. Devon (Watcombe, Torquay, Devonmoor, etc) from that era. Buy it if you like it, but it's a bit unfashionable at the moment.

V&B Schramberg, before 1914,
that explains the Art Nouveau shape
"TR" stands for Underglaze Painting
cf. Adressbuch der Keramischen Industrie, 1907
btw it´s the early version of the famous black forest house pattern, called "Rembrandt".
The decor was produced by V&B Schramberg and later by SMF for decades.
cf. a very early copy of vase 2125 with V&B S[chramberg] on the base.

Not to my knowledge, i suppose you refer to the "Arsall" line,Taylor Thomas wrote:It did remind me of some designs I have in a Lausitzer Glas book was there any conection?
the "Arsall" mark was registered in 1918 but the line has a strong french connection, stylistically before 1900,
Galle, impressionism etc. with delicate colours

Re: Unusual Hand Painted Vase
The Black forest connection is probably why I liked it. I lived there for a year as a child and loved it there. I like the painting and can see the comparison to motto ware. Will still give them the information, they seem to have it priced right for the right buyer. Will now see if I can find the farm we lived at on Google Earth. Thanks all for the help, Pete
