Double Sided PAT PEND Glass Vase or Lamp Bases??? Empty Double Sided PAT PEND Glass Vase or Lamp Bases???

These look like old oil lamp bases to me but I found these together just as the first few pictures show. Does anyone know or recognize them? Could they possibly have been a pair of lamps that maybe had the tops broke and someone put them together? Or does anyone know if this is the way they're suppose to be and what their function might be?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
