Blue vase with silver overlay
Hi!
I am trying to ID a vase I recently got. It's about 17cm tall and is made of what I think is white porcelain. There's a photo of a glaze miss and the clay definitely looks pretty light. The whole thing is very elegant and very well-made.
The glaze is very dark blue (cobalt) and the design is painted with silver. The design covers the whole vase and is different on two sides; it's two phoenix birds over flowers. The silverwork is extremely detailed and it's a very thin layer - it's certainly painted, not overlaid (as in, the silver layer is attached to the glaze, and isn't a thicker layer of silver simply laid over the vase).
I think it's wheel-thrown and the inside is not very even, as far as I can feel when I stick my finger in it. I can feel the circular ridges.
I have no idea where it comes from. European? Asian? Doesn't look American to me. Any pointers are much appreciated!
Also, there are a few dark spots on the silver - probably tarnish. What's the best way to clean it? I am really afraid to run it somehow.

Re: Blue vase with silver overlay
Based on the decoration round the neck, the blue ground, and assuming it's porcelain, I suspect it's Chinese, late 19th Century. copying the Western style and for export to Europe, which is why there's a mix of Continental and Chinese styles on the piece.
