Teal japanese (?) abstract studio pot
Really heavy, brown clay, matte rough teal glaze with some abstract designs. The glaze is really cool; it's uneven and quite porous. Looks like orange peel. Can't make out the incised mark - might be something like EK, EH, JEK, or JEH. The pot came from an estate of an antique dealer who seemed to be into Japanese art so I am assuming it might be Japanese, but I don't really know.

Nothing that suggests that it is Japanese to me.

I wouldn't have thought Japanese, either. Maybe German or a student piece.

They've made a bit of a mess with the wax resist so I suspect it's by a student or keen amateur. Since you're in the US it's probably locally made, rather than German.

Thanks, all! Naomi, what do you mean by the "mess with the wax resist?" I don't actually know what wax resist is :)
Thanks!

Re: Teal japanese (?) abstract studio pot
Where those black squiggles and lines are on bare clay, the potter has used a wax crayon, or similar, so that any glaze that covered the area can't stick when the pot is fired. You wouldn't normally expect to see black squiggles and lines left behind after such a technique which is why, to me, it looks a mess; a student or practice piece.

Just a thought that it might have been made by the dealer, whose estate it came from or one of his family.

It could very well be.
