gourd vase
a conundrum. When i think of burnised clay pottery, i tend to think central and southern America. When i think of double gourd vases, i go to the Orient. It looks to be wheel thrown so i imagine is not terribly old, certainly not as old as some coil built pots. So, East or West? or could it even be African?
one for Naomi to sprint to the finish line first i imagine!!!

Re: gourd vase
I'll get in first but with no great confidence - looks kind of Islamic to me.

Re: gourd vase
I think the Ugangan pots will have been coiled and it is the decoration that made me think Islamic. Most pots in sub Saharan Africa would traditionally have been coiled.

Re: gourd vase
My first thought was Barro negro (black clay) pottery from Oaxaca, Mexico, which is typically burnished like this, but the chips on the foot rim show a terracotta clay so I'm not so sure. It's not saying African to me because of the terracotta. Also Mexican potters use the pinch-pot method, and a gourd would be formed from two pinch pots of different sizes. I think your original thought of somewhere in the Americas is the right one.

Re: gourd vase
the decor looks more African to me and not geometric so not typically Islamic
