Vera Tollow vase
I bought this vase today and I am very pleased to have found it. I have identified it as by Vera Tollow (the name on base was a clue) but wondered if anyone had any idea of date. I know nothing much about the potter and would appreciate any info. I dont even know how collectable she is at the moment, as have seen a few pieces on various auction sites with huge differences in prices. Thanks John

Re: Vera Tollow
Vera Tollow 1931- she stopped potting in 2000, but I don't know date of your piece , I have seen pieces of her work on Ebay before not selling at all , but that could have been an off week , probably one to keep till things pick up on her .

Vera Tollow
I love the way the rust-coloured wax resist decoration looks like four little hands.

I've just discovered Vera Tollow too. Paul Rice really rates her and I can see why. 12cm (height).
Re: Vera Tollow
I'm surprised how little biography there is about her online.

Suspect that people can't place her work - too individual for the time and not part of any 'movement'. Being a woman probably didn't help Still, it means there's more for us fans to snap up
Re: Vera Tollow
Unfortunately this casserole dish is missing it's lid. Looks nicer with the camera flash on, but the un-flashed picture of the other side is closer to it's true colours.

27 cm Stoneware Bowl with the normal painted TOLLOW signature on the back. Its interesting that there is so little information available about such a highly accomplished potter. Most of the information I have gleaned is from her short biographies in the various POTTERS books by the CPA. She trained at Croydon School of Art. She was a founder member of the Craftsman Potter's Association and Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. Her workshop was in the garden of her house in Wallington, Surrey. She exhibited very widely, and appeared in every issue of POTTERS up to the 7th one in 1986.
She was up there with the best potters in the country, for several decades. Her work is excellent and extremely accomplished. Yet seems to have fallen through the cracks in history, and is now virtually unknown, Which is sad, for such a superb potter.
