Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
Just wondered if any of you might have an opinion on this. Stoneware, in the style of a Japanese drinking cup (yunomi) but no sign of a mark.

Re: Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
I've got no idea, reminds me of a well known Japanese potter, but I'm sure if it were his you would know.

Re: Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
You must have me confused with someone else, Potty.
I was given an opinion by the person that I bought it off but, as he was probably the dodgiest studio pottery dealer* that I have known, I took that with a pinch of salt.
* I don't think that he deals in studio pottery these days.

By "but I'm sure if it were his you would know", I mean I'm sure it would have crossed you mind and would have a fair idea
I also know without any real evidence, now matter how sure you were personally, you would not attribute it to being by him

Re: Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
Hamada is the potter it reminds me of, not surprising it reminds me of his work though
I know hardly anything about his work or this sort of thing. As you say Ed, being unmarked, I expect a lot could have made it.

Re: Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
yes , I could think of a dozen at least , Warren Mackenzie studio , but clay doesn't look right imo, the, bay has one under shinyuki but again that doesn't look quality , I'm personally not a big fan of Hamada stuff -overrated imo and would always be wary of the provenances dished out as his ( usually just word of mouth), but hey ,others know better than me it's only my opinion.

Re: Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
I think that it might have been made in Mashiko but I don't feel that confident in saying that to be honest.

Re: Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
It's nice but.....Dare I say you will never know for sure? I'd give you £20 for it, max. Without a mark it's merely a pretty ornament.

Re: Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
It does look like the same glazes used in Skip's hexagonal bowl, but unless you find another that is definitely identified as Hamada's it will always have a question mark against it.

Phil Rogers is your man for recognising Hamada's work - he often talks about it on his facebook page

We know all about Phil and his expertise with Hamada on this forum. He doesn't like this forum and I think there are a few members who feel the same about him.

Re: Yunomi in the snow - unmarked
Yes - I read that and it was the one that made me a little cautious about posting . You are all being very polite about my Hamadas thank goodness. For me, they are a starting point on my current learning curve into the world of historic studio pottery. I hope in time to handle better authenticated pieces (hopefully when the York Art Gallery reopens) and will then be able to make my own mind up. In the meantime, I'm happy to tell people who I think they are by with the proviso that I'm no expert myself

Max is the chap who buys when Mark can't be found. It's that simple.
