Vintage jug 1942
The second jug I bought today.
Wheel-turned. Heavily potted, grogged terracotta, with a brown and clear glaze. Slipware decoration on handle and date: 1942.
Something like chalk or ash in the grogg is making circles of glaze ping off. And there are a couple of 'tide marks' in the glaze.
The only mark is a crosshatch or H on the base. My feeling is it's made for a farm kitchen or pub and the mark is for a piece rate. Plus the handle's a bit weak so probably an apprentice or homemade piece (it was the war years).
