Re: Frank Smith, FS mark
It could be by Frank Smith, who was really responsible for me becoming interested in studio pottery. I visited his studio in Peasmarsh, Kent after seeing a sign saying "Pottery Open" and that was it.
He was a member of the CPA and died in 1994. This looks like one of the marks he used - I'll try and check, as the glaze doesn't look familiar but certainly not out of the question.

Re: Frank Smith, FS mark
By coincidence I looked up Frank Smith but the mark didn't match. But if he used different marks pver the years that could account for it.

THat's great.
Do you have an example? I found one on ebay that looked very different, so I'm assuming they got their Id wrong..

I'm only going by the mark in the CPA published "Potters", 2 marks are listed and this looks like a match to the first, the 2nd being more a stylised version.

I've seen references to a Frank Smith being Colin Pearson's assistant, and a Frank Smith of Rye Pottery, father or Tim Smith. Are they the same person?

Frank had nothing to do with the Rye Pottery but was a member of the Rye Society of Artists. He did work with Colin Pearson in Aylesford and later was assisted at his own pottery by his son, Tim, for two years.

Here is the Frank Smith bowl that I mentioned above. The first piece of studio pottery that I ever bought.

It is but it is under the glaze so difficult to photograph.

Re: Frank Smith, FS mark
1988. I was on my way back from a day out in Rye and saw this sign "Pottery Open". I didn't realise at the time how significant stopping rather than carrying on would be.
