Wenford bridge - Ara Cardew
Is this the seal mark for Michael Cardew, it aint as clear to see compared to other pieces with his CM mark.

Re: Ara Cardew
The Wenford Bridge seal is clear enough but the other seal doesn't look like Michael Cardew's. As Potty says it isn't clear and many potters were allowed to use a personal seal during their time at the pottery.
It would be interesting to see an image of the pot.

Re: Ara Cardew
It looks like the Picasso ceramics that got produced in the 60's. No idea how those were marked or if this is not simply a version inspired by them. Worth a web look though as the originals are very sought after.

Re: Ara Cardew
Cheers. The finger swipes round the edge are similar to some of the Picasso copyists but the face is very different.

Ara Cardew has confirmed that he made it approx 25 years ago as a special commission of 100 plates.

Looks like AC for Ara Cardew. Just checked google images and the decoration is very like his style too.

Ara Cardew Bowl
Hi All
I picked up this Ara Cardew bowl yesterday at an auction, it is about 5 inches in diameter and three inches tall, It has clear marks for Wenford Bridge and Ara Cardew but it also has the numerals 50 within the Wenford Bridge mark.
Can anyone shed any light on the meaning of these numerals. My thoughts are that it either relates to a limited edition or maybe a 50 year anniversary. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Ara Cardew
Most likely the 50th anniversary of Wenford Bridge pottery which would have been in 1989. Wenford Bridge was not the sort of pottery that did limited edition or individual birthday/anniversary souvenir items.

Re: Ara Cardew
I have a plate by Ara Cardew with a similar mark and received this info from him ‘...confirmed that he made it approx 25 years ago as a special commission of 100 plates.’

I can assure you limited edition & birthday pots were made at Wenford Bridge. My ex (Ara's cousin) has a birthday plate by Seth and her mother has one too made by Michael. I have a one off tankard made by Ara to my own design, when he was at Wenford.
My last visit there I spotted a tea-pot in the shape of a Harley Davidson....a commission for someone he told me, was sat on the shelf.

Jay.

Not true. I have a one off tankard designed by me and commissioned by my girlfriend to Ara to make. She has a 'birth plate' made by Seth as had her late Mother who was cousin to Michael.
They did loads of birth plates and anniversary plates/mugs etc, all you needed to do was ask and they would oblige.

Jay.
