Italian bottle jug - possibly Bitossi
Although it has obviously seen some punishment, I was sure that I had seen similarly decorated items and liked the lava-like coloured glazes, so purchased it for 20p with the aim of finding out more about it. However, my searches have drawn an absolute zero. I'm sure the fans of Italian ceramics on here will be able to enlighten me.
Height is 6", diameter (excluding extremities) 4.5". The inscription on the base is "405/5 Italy"

Re: Italian bottle jug - possibly Bitossi
Unless it's marked with a recognisable maker's name, like Bitossi, it's very difficult to say who made such pieces. They all seem to have the handwritten xxx/xx Italy style marks.
This appears to have the grogg-filled clay used by Bitossi so it might be one of theirs, but I wouldn't like to put money on it.

As it happens Naomi the base glaze (visible in the inetrior) is blue, so could indicate Bitossi. Its frustrating, because I'm sure I've seen similar items on the internet before, but as is often the way, when you want to refer back you just can't find the info again!

Worth getting hold of a copy of Mark Hill's book, Alla Moda, as it might be mentioned in there. Unfortunately I don't have a copy to check.

I just checked. There's nothing similar in Mark Hill's book.
Re: Italian bottle jug - possibly Bitossi
From what I understand his book is more a brief intro to various factory's / potters, than a comprehensive guide, would that be correct?

yes, you could say that.
It's definitely not the result of a profound research.
It's quite sketchy and it lacks lots of information.
In some points I find it not very reliable.
