Large old stoneware bottle - Portuguese ginger beer bottle
Unusual old bottle with a brown lumpy and bubbly glaze. Almost 13" tall.
I suspect it's 19th Century. Anyone know about old bottles?

I know nothing much about them, but it looks more recent than 19th century to me?

Well it's handmade on a wheel, the glaze is crazed and lumpy with cracks and impurities, which makes me think it was made before mechanization. Or made in the 20th Century somewhere like provincial France for someone's personal beer or olive oil production.

Those are some of the reason I think it's later
The shape somehow seems wrong for a 19th century bottle (to me), the way the base has been finished / cut from the wheel and the nice orange peel glaze.
But... "me know no nothing!"

Re: Large old stoneware bottle - Portuguese ginger beer bottle
When I was young (the age Potty is now) I used to dig up bottles in glass and stoneware from old dumps.
Potty is far too young to have done such a thing but his reasoning seems sound to me - it looks late 20th/early 21st century from your images but might be slightly older.

Re: Large old stoneware bottle - Portuguese ginger beer bottle
It's been standing next to one of my pate bowls for a while, and just realized they have very similar glaze. So I think probably French; 2nd half of the 20th century.

Sounds likely to me anyway.
