Whieldon Brentleigh Ware Vase
I bought this at auction around 8 years ago and have tried in vain to find out something about it. Obviously it can't be THE Whieldon, I considered Walter Keeler but there are no other marks besides those impressed on the base, which are Whieldon, with a small M underneath and England.
It stands approx 10" high and is a mottled brown colour.
Hope someone out there can shed some light

Re: Whieldon Brentleigh Ware Vase
I suspect Whieldon is the pattern rather than the pottery. Looks 1930s vintage. A lot of potteries didn't put their names on the pots back then which makes it difficult to Id.

Probably the shape number rather than pattern (same difference ), but I agree.
Brentleigh would be my best guess, but I don't know much about the factorys that used this type of glaze.

Hmmm, pretty sure its not F. Winkle, as far as I am aware they didn't do this type of thing. It doesn't feel like Brentleigh , though the only Brentleigh I've seen is quite thickly potted and almost chalky.
This has a terracotta body.
But thanks for the imput :-)

I expect it's white earthenware that has been painted over, it has that look to me at least. If it is, then it's in exceptionally good condition.
It's certainly factory made and not Walter Keeler / studio pottery.

Re: Whieldon Brentleigh Ware Vase
Certainly made in one of the many Staffordshire factories in the 1930s that was making less expensive versions of wares made popular by the major factories.

Anyone got any idea as to who made this? Impressed Whieldon with a small M underneath and England, I have searched in vain.
Quite big - it stands 10 1/4"

Re: Whieldon Brentleigh Ware Vase
Thomas Whieldon was a famous 18th Century Potter.
Nowadays, the name generally refers to a style of glaze. Walter Keeler's later non-salt glaze work is a stylised form of Whieldon glaze. Having said that, this looks nothing much like a Whieldon glaze....
