Re: Mike Dodd
Thanks very much for those excellent photos Naomi. The whole display looks mouth watering. If I was still collecting, I would be sorely tempted standing there in front of those pots.
Mike Dodd must be about 80 now. It is amazing that he is still producing such wonderful pots. A much under estimated potter. Which is a pity, cos his work is beautiful.

Re: Mike Dodd
Yes, his family organised an 80th birthday this year. He looks amazing for his age. I was hoping to see some of his son’s work too but no such luck. His next firing is around Christmas so I’m hoping to pop in again in the New Year

Re: Mike Dodd
I went back in March - fabulous. He was very kind and hospitable (ended up having a tour of his house, as well as the pottery!). I bought some wonderful bits - a few medium-sized bowls, some yunomi, and a very large bottle vase that's technically a 'second' (it only has a teeny tiny firing blemish).

Re: Mike Dodd
He only had 3 pots left in his 'seconds' shed. He said he has a very low failure rate, which is very rare with wood firing; some potters have as high as 50%. He really is a Master Potter

Re: Mike Dodd
I haven't seen many pieces with that mark so it's a nice addition to the Forum, even if you did all of the work yourself.

Re: Mike Dodd
I was being a bit lazy when I posted it. Then I had a look in section 19 of the marks book, spiral etc. and bingo. 1971-75 at Whatlington. Actually it was in section 18.

Mark almost filled with glaze - Mike Dodd
I bought this at auction as being by Phil Rogers.
It has been conclusively identified as definitely NOT by Phil Rogers.
The mark which is impressed is almost entirely filled with glaze and is impossible to read but I still hold out hope someone may recognise the style.
I’m not saying it is by Mike Dodd but looking at the mark is that a J coming out of the bottom?
TIA any suggestions - I don’t want to embarrass myself but if it is possibly by Mike I would contact him to confirm….or deny

Re: Mike Dodd
Mike Dodd is notorious for his glaze infilled mark. I have a couple. But it looks more like second from the picture. That glazing at the top looks distinctly messy and somewhat careless. What is the inside one like? Another possibility might be David Lloyd Jones from Fulford York. An Important Leach style potter whose mark was sometimes glaze filled.

Re: Mike Dodd
I hope you've written to the well-known Oxfordshire based auction house to tell them they're wrong? I bought a real Phil Rogers bowl in that sale!

Re: Mike Dodd
To be honest I have a decent relationship with Max and it’s not worth the effort. I like Mike’s work anyway and I have learned something ….lovely human being that Mike Dodd!

My reply could be read as a little harsh - I was being a little tongue-in-cheek. Yes, good to foster these relationships. I have a lot of time for MD!

It's a smashing bowl. Mike Dodd is retiring this month so prices are sure to rise
