Iv'r just found an on line Company Staffordshire Gifts selling an exact same owl , size , decor etc saying it's signed and stamped carole glover , I wonder why Carole says this isn't hers as it clearly is an exact lookalike .

They should all look roughly the same ed, they are reproductions
The one you mention does look similar, but there are differences.

Yeah ! reproductions but glaze always different , actualy Carole sent a pic of an owl jug , nothing like mine but the shop one in question is a dead ringer , so it's a little puzzling .

This particular glaze I think is quite commonly used to be honest, as is the clay. I'm not saying it's defiantly not hers, but I expect there are quite a few others it could have been, so would be inclined to take her word for it.
Also the small pictures on that site don't help, as even one of the originals looks very similar from a small picture:

By the way the base finish does looks a little different to Carols, from what I've seen.

The owl on that link isn't the one I am refering to , staffordshire gifts has the same pot , there is a doubt as to what's on the base in their shop imo. I mean they say Signed & Stamped Cg , yet she says all signed

Re: Slipware Ozzie Owl style Jug - Irma Starr?
Very odd. When I bought the slipware cat I was told by the dealer that Carole supplies the Staffordshire Potteries museum shop with copies of Ollie the Owl. If Carole says it's not hers (and, tbh, her stuff is a little chunkier), then someone else must be making copies too. Maybe they're passing them off as originals?

Found a possible match = Ed Dawes

This might be his pottery - now dissolved.

(Looked on Carole's website and her slipware owl is different - much chunkier, like my cat. So I expect this is by someone else.)

Re: Slipware Ozzie Owl style Jug - Irma Starr?
I think the confusion between the two is both potters are copying an original Staffordshire piece. As much as I love Carole's stuff, she's not technically skillful in turning the clay - tbh,her cat looks more coil built than wheel-turned; although I've just checked and it is turned. Her forte is in the slipware decoration (hence my calling her jugs 'chunky').
Your owl jug looks alot better, thinner, potted, especially the cup head. Hence my belief it's by a different potter.

It's not, but what I'm saying is from a small picture like in my link or the gift company's pictures, they both look very close to yours. Though the one in my link is an original period piece.
When you posted the owl in her thread, the first thing I thought was "is it really hers?", I don't her pots as well as many on here, but that was my gut feeling anyway.
Nice piece either way.

I know that the potter, John Hudson, makes similar things in his "Repro" range but I think that your owl doesn't look "crisp" enough. He marks his work with an impressed H (or two or three depending on the mood). He has a website, which Mrs. H looks after so could be contacted.

Another Reply from Carole -
Hi
'Staffordshire gifts' is from the Potteries Museum and yes the one shown on line is one of mine. However the one you have purchased I can tell by the shape and by decoration is certainly not one I have made.
If you look closely at the decoration on the image I supplied along with the image shown on line you will see that the feathering decorating technique and shape of the owl are very different.
I do not know who made your owl but others do make versions of 'Ozzie' the Owl discovered on the Antique road show and now displayed in the Potteries Museum, where my Owls are sold.
I hope this helps with regards to tracking down the maker.
Best Wishes
Carole
It now makes me wonder if it's an import but imports aren't usually red clay ach well never mind thanks for all your help and suggestions

Re: Slipware Ozzie Owl style Jug - Irma Starr?
Very much doubt its an import. I know of some potters in the US who copy Redware but, as you say, the clay is different.
There are also a couple of other potters in the UK who make reproductions, eg for TV and movies, but they leave the piece partially unfinished so its obvious on close inspection that its a copy.

I also think it's a British potter, probably unmarked because it's a reproduction, but not to deceive anyone.
There are potters who seem to specialise in good quality reproductions, thought it could equally have been a commission, I think Henry Sandon had a replica made, I believe I saw/handled it when I met him 10-12 years ago.
