Mid Century slab style vase. Looks and feels Italian?
Hi
I bought this last weekend. It measures 21 cm (8.25 inches) tall by 12 cm (5 inches) across. It's surprisingly light, weighing just over 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds). It had a pad underneath which I removed, but no markings on the base. Any ideas?
Thanks
Wyvern

I don't think it's an import. I suspect its by a studio pottery local to you.

Thank you, but I'm pretty sure it's not Australian. It's slipcast, not hand built.

It's a hand built slab pot, so whoever made it was a studio potter or a student. It's possible it's a piece someone has made and brought to Australia.

As I said, it's slipcast. I've probably confused things by putting "slab style" in the title. I'll take a few more pictures tomorrow.

Well it's not Bitossi, then, because their pieces are slab built. One would expect it to be marked with a handwritten number and 'Italy', if it was Italian. Factories other than Bitossi, often use a white earthenware, where as this looks to be made of a pinkish clay.
Trouble with Italian pieces, without a factory mark it's very difficult to say who made it.

Came across a couple of slab-made Italian pieces recently. One was made by Fantoni, and the other by Aldo Londi for Bitossi (so much for my saying they never made slab pieces).
If you're on Facebook it's worth asking on the Midcentury Italian Ceramics and Bitossi Group where you can see the two other pieces (on a thread posted by Alison Walker, 18 July at 23:09).
