Yes it does look Art Deco. Don't know the mark, though.

I spent some time looking for this and could not find the mark or this set. That first letter in the mark looks to be a 2 letter mix of upper and lower case. The style is so Art Deco that it has given me a gut feeling that it is not period. The decorative finish seems to coarse for the high end manufacturing that the form would denote suggesting either a lower manufacturer cashing in on the style at the time or possibly a later revival. The black quarter finish on the saucer just seems OTT though the base seems to show age. The upshot being is a concern that it may be late 20th Century. No offence meant and I hope someone can get a difinitive identification for you.

I suspect it is from the period, but made by a small pottery. Possibly French.

Possibly. The writing does look more English than Continental. But I'd still put it earlier. Maybe 40-50s. I'm sure I've seen some teapots with a similar shape post WW2 / early 50s.

I agree with you Naomi! Maybe from a french small factory, produced after ww2 when this kind of design begin to be common - too much art deco to be true!!! And the quality is not so good!

I've come across a few pieces of Art Deco pottery and silver plate tea service commissioned by cruise liners in the 1930s. It's possible this is also a commission for a ship or even a train. It has that low-slung shape that would suit a moving carriage or dining room.

Hi,
Faianças GAL was a factory operating in Lisbon between 1935 and 1937.
This set is made by them.

Please see this: http://modernaumaoutranemtanto.blogspot.pt/2013/10/caixa-art-deco-gal.html

Fantastico, applauso, Rita !

A mystery solved.
I thaught it could be french or dutch, black and cream decor / glaze like the Haarlem tea set design Ursula Fesca for Waechtersbach, 1932/33, but not german, i daresay i would know that.

Moreover, there have been rumours about Spritzdecor
in Portugal, i have seen some tea sets with Spritzdekor and got a tea cup from a friend but
there is very little reliable info about the makers.

Could you please provide an english translation
of the website or an abstract with basis facts, please Rita !

BTW The german jug from Carstens Georgenthal, 1931/32 on the website is mine, exhibited 2006 at Karlsruhe, design by the austrian Maria Piffl as i found out later. Eva Zeisel who worked for Carstens Hirschau met Piffl at the Lipsia fair autumn 1931.
("Zeisel in Germany", exhibition at Weiden, Bavaria, 2013, 2 catalogs )
