just wanted to confirm that this is by him as i cannot find his mark anywhere.

Sometimes auction houses do get identification right and they did this time!
Rainer was a member of the CPA in the 1970s and early 1980s and then disappeared - I assume stopped potting or died. He had been Head of Ceramics at Bristol Polytechnic in the 1970s.

Some Google detecting led me to this website

which shows a piece by George Rainer (1923-2004) and if you scroll down to the marks section #17 shows the corresponding potter's mark. Looks the same to me.
