how to date cloisonne?
cloisonne trinket box which should be japanese ?
i see lots of cloisonne stuff from china on the markets...
i don't know how to date them...
and how to date this one???

Tbh I wouldn't like to hazard a guess. Most of it looks Chinese to me (the butterfly looks a bit Cantonese) and I have no idea how to date them. Saw a video on it recently where it was being churned out by the ton on a virtual production line of skilled closonne workers. Nice quality, but then they have been doing it for hundreds of years.

Nice box! I believe this is Japanese turn of the century - 1920's cloisonne. I date the piece based on the style of the wire work, design, base metal, type of glass filling. I have a few Chinese & Japanese cloisonne pieces from different periods which I feel (along with a ton research) is the easiest way to determine age/origin.
