Looks like an actual copper band around the top and bottom. Asian I guess?

Interesting pot. The P and cross mark looks familiar; might be sn old Christian symbol. I'm wondering if it's Greek. Is the green patination from the bonze ring, or is it a green glaze that is mimicking a bronze patination? If it's the latter then it points to Greek manufacture, copying Classical Greek pots for the 20th Century tourist market.

Thanks for your thoughts. I don't believe the green should be there. It seems to be like oxidized copper. But, you're mentioning bronze. Maybe so.

Sorry, for bronze read copper & vice versa, both give a viridian green patination, but this looks like a green glaze or wash which has been applied to mimic a copper viridian green patination.

The symbol used is a Chi Rho , one of the earliest forms of Christogram and is used by some Christians

It looks like a pottery copy of a Classical bronze/copper vase, so probably a tourist piece, but worth getting checked out at your local museum just to be on the safe side.

By the way, the green does clean off. Would it do so if it were glaze or wash?

Sounds like it's a low fired glaze over a low fired terraccotta, making it liable to peeling and chipping and washing off.

A most unwise thing to do. Let's hope that it is a piece of tourist ware as it seems to appear from the images and not something valuable.

As well as the Chi Rho, the fish is also a christian symbol as are the Alpha and Omega. This is a total guess but Rome/Vatican tourist ware? They are all known early christian symbols that can be found in the Roman catacombs

I haven't been to a museum yet, but the entire outside is coated in bronze, I'm almost certain. It can be seen on the fish and a few other spots. And, the green is definitely because of the bronze (or copper). Doesn't seem like the form is correct for it to be "old" though.
