Re: Gray's Pottery, Hanley & Stoke on Trent.
These "Banded wares" are usually attibuted to Susie Cooper, who introduced
them, while at Grays, in 1928, but probably continued in production after she left
in 1929.

Gray's Pottery, Stoke on Trent. 10" plate with the mark for the 1940s-50s, and double stamp (Gray's mark stamped over the mark of the factory supplying the blanks). with pink Sunderland lustre and black transfer print tiled Mariner's Compass - similar transfer to those used in the early days of the Portmeirion Pottery

These lustre ware fancies, were ordered by SW Ellis to be sold in the Portmerion
"Ship shop" c1958/9, using Gray's stock transfers, Soon after she started doing
her own distinctive designs to put on similar pieces .

Cheers, Denby. I thought there must be a connection because the design on this is very similar to the ship ones on my Portmeirion coffee pot

A.E GRAY & CO Glebe Works Hanley 1912-33, Whieldon Rd Stoke 1934-61. Retitled Portmeiron potteries from December 1961.
The particular mark on your piece was only used 1930-33. Hence the strikingly 1930's bright colours.

Re: Gray's Pottery, Hanley & Stoke on Trent.
Thank you for your reply philpot.
Would I be able to tell who painted them by the number 9180 F, could it be Susie Cooper?

Re: Gray's Pottery, Hanley & Stoke on Trent.
No. Susie Cooper worked for A.E.Gray in the 1920's, but left in 1929 to set up her own design company. You are probably confusing design and painters. The famous design ladies Clarice Cliffe, Susie Cooper etc made their name as designers. Painting was done by hundreds-if not thousands- of women working in the various potteries. Pottery was still a Very big business in Stoke in the 1930's.

Re: Gray's Pottery, Hanley & Stoke on Trent.
Remember Gray's didn't make pottery. I will see if the number codes are in the book.
Much of the "banded ware" is attribured to Susie Cooper, but not all.

Re: Gray's Pottery, Hanley & Stoke on Trent.
From the book, the highest pattern numbers attributed to Susie Cooper at Gray's
were around 8600, so this is a little later.
You can make out the understamp "Pareek", which I think was Johnson Bros,
who actually made the blank pottery, bought in by Gray's.

Re: Gray's Pottery, Hanley & Stoke on Trent.
Hi Curiosityseeker thank you for your post, your sugar bowl and milk jug are the same as mine or should I say my milk jug was until it got broken in fact, the set is like mine the cups are coffee cups so different and the stamp is different but possibly they are similar dates.
An old Aunt gave me this set when I was engaged to be married in 1969 so I have had it for quite some time, I think she had put it aside for her "bottom drawer" as we used to say years ago, but she sadly never got married.
I am giving it to my daughter so I just thought I would try to find out a little about it for her.
Yes, these pottery sets are beautifully coloured.

Re: Gray's Pottery, Hanley & Stoke on Trent.
Obvious Susie connection with Grays but not a pattern I've seen before on a pot that I haven't associated with Grays or Cooper in the past. The "J.R. Dec 1935" thing is also a mystery, so all-in-all I'm non-plussed, as they say in old books.
It holds a good amount of beer and is a pleasing weight so I might investigate this particular property a bit (lot) further

Re: Gray's Pottery, Hanley & Stoke on Trent.
I believe decorators in various factories we’re allowed to decorate blanks for special and personal occasions such as weddings and anniversaries. I’m guessing this is one such piece.
It was made after Suzie Cooper had left the company so I’ll split it and merge it with the Gray’s thread
