Large White Oviod Vessel
Here's a large ovoid vessel it's 16" tall and 10" in diameter. It has an ivory color satin glaze. It definitely looks hand made and it's made in to halves with a slight seam around the middle. I don't know what it is, but I know what it's not. It's not Chinese, Japanese, or even Korean. I had Lark Mason from the "Antiques Roadshow" look at this for me along with some other things and that's what he said. Since Asian art is his specialty his only suggestion was that it's either American or European. I thought maybe a 60's piece from say Scandinavia. I really love it whatever it is. -Mike-

It's a popular shape. The seam around the middle troubles me. I'm wondering if it's Chinese made, for Ikea.

Another thought is Alcobaca, Portugal (or even Italy) as they produce large pieces of white glazed pottery, stamped in black ink which can fade or rub off.

Throwing two bowls and joining them in this way would be the usual way for a potter to make this form. The picture does make this stand out but from my own experience I would not be surprised if it is less obvious "in the flesh".

Ah, cheers. I was thinking of the chinese method of making larger pots in sections. I thought something this size by a studio potter would be one piece.
