Unusual Orb Shaped Lidded Pot Empty Unusual Orb Shaped Lidded Pot

Could anyone please shed some light on this unusual orb shaped lidded pot ?
I've absolutely no idea as to it's purpose. Perhaps it's just a piece of art pottery.
I did wonder if it was an incense burner, but it has no holes in the top to let the smoke out.
The pen marking on the base looks a bit Japanese, however I have been unable to decipher it.
